Kamala Sohoni was a prominent organic chemist who became the first Indian woman to earn a PhD


 in the discipline.  She was born at 31 Walk 1912 in Bombay India (presently Mumbai) and grew up in a family that respected training and encouraged her to pursue science.

    After completing her graduation in science, Kamala was given a grant to study at Michigan College in the US, where she earned a bachelor's degree in natural chemistry.  Thereafter, she returned to India, at that time, and joined the Indian Science Foundation in Bangalore, where she studied under the distinguished natural chemist Sir C.V.  Worked under the direction of  Raman.

    In 1939, Kamala became the first woman to earn a PhD in logic in a short span of time.  His search focused on the healthiest parts of the traditional Indian food chickpea.  His discoveries established chickpea as an important source of protein and essential amino acids, leading to improved nutrition in India.

    Despite her many achievements, Kamala faced many difficulties as a woman in the male-dominated field of science.  She often struggled to earn the respect she deserved and was often overlooked for advancement and administrative roles.  However, he continued to contribute to the field of organic chemistry throughout his career.

    Kamala Sohoni died in 1998 at the age of 86, but her legacy lives on as a pioneering researcher and role model for women in science.
